Biography

Spencer was born in Oklahoma City on May 2, 1939. He attended the University of Oklahoma where he received a BS degree in Chemical Engineering in 1962.

Spencer joined Monsanto Chemical Company at Texas City, Texas, as a Chemical Engineer. He was awarded two patents for improvements in the production of acetylene which was then the raw material for polyvinyl acetate and PVC plastics. He attended the University of Houston's MBA program in night school. Spencer switched to marketing and held several positions in marketing, commercial development and sales management. He earned an Executive Sales Management degree from Columbia University. Several more promotions and moves took Spencer to Tokyo, Japan where he became Director, North Pacific, for Monsanto Japan Limited directing Monsanto's sales in Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Spencer was elected Chairman of the Chemicals Division of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan, and was a business consultant to the American Embassy.

Spencer was very active in AIChE, SPE and SPI holding several board positions. He also served as a trustee for the SPI-PAC in California.

After 32 years with Monsanto, Spencer retired in 1994 and started Knapp Consulting specializing in international marketing. The SPI Southern California Chapter hired him to do education outreach to local colleges. Spencer established programs with Cal. St. Long Beach and Cerritos College. He was elected to the Western Plastics Pioneers Hall of Fame in 2003. He currently serves on the Cerritos College Plastics Board, President of the Western Plastics Pioneers, and the OKChE Board.
