Graduate Advising

Skip Side Navigation

It is strongly encouraged that communication for advisement is conducted as soon as it is available to the student, and during the Fall or Spring semesters if applicable.  Please note that faculty are busy and it may take some time for them to respond.

Once a graduate student has been fully and officially admitted to a graduate program (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Computer Science, the student must reach out to one of the faculty for formal advisement.  A faculty member in Computer Science must advise the student for course progression in the degree.  Below is the direction given based on the degree being pursued –

For a new and/or continuing M.S. student (that is a traditional on-campus M.S. student or an Accelerated B.S./M.S. student who is fully into the M.S. portion of the accelerated degree), one of the following faculty must be contacted for formal advisement:

^*If this process is being done during the Summer (when most faculty are not in their office) and these faculty have not responded to any communication, please contact the following faculty for formal advisement:

For a new and/or continuing M.S. student (that is an OU Online M.S. program student), the following faculty must be contacted for formal advisement:

For a new and/or continuing Ph.D. student, the student must contact the faculty member who will be their dissertation/research chairperson for formal advisement.  If no faculty member has been determined to be the dissertation/research chairperson, please contact the following faculty for formal advisement:

Connected to advising, it is imperative that graduate students adhere to the checklists for their degree (which are regularly updated); see below for the Masters degree as well as the Doctoral degree checklist links:

Lastly but not least, it is also important for graduate students to know and understand the expected timelines and forms set forth by the Graduate College; these are managed by the Graduate College:

Understanding the respective graduate program checklist as well as the Graduate College timelines and forms are essential to stay on-top of a student’s progression through the graduate program and to help with the overall aspect of advisement.
