Dr. Kang's background is in human factors, human-integrated systems engineering, and human computer interaction. Kang’s specialty is in developing algorithms that can discover significant patterns from complex eye movements, which can be used to inform the design of systems and develop training intervention methods. Complex haptic interactions and brain activities can also be characterized to reveal significant patterns. Application areas include air traffic control, weather forecasting, commercial advertisement, driving, piloting, Deepwater Horizon offshore oil drilling, and higher education.

Human-integrated systems engineering
Human factors
Cognitive engineering
Eye tracking data analytics and visualization
Human-computer interaction

Current applications are in, but not limited to,
Air traffic management systems (e.g. visual scanning and aircraft control strategies)
Weather systems (e.g. forecasters' decision making processes)
Online Healthcare systems (e.g. user interaction behavior)
Virtual reality systems (e.g. oil & gas drilling and exploration)
