student studying and promoting global fluency

Letter from the Chair

This is an exciting time in the Department of International and Area Studies.  Adding to the strength of our accomplished faculty, we have during the past couple of years hired superb teacher-scholars with expertise in the societies, histories, politics and economies of several critical countries and regions, including Brazil, China, India, Iran, Pakistan and sub-Saharan Africa.  In addition to publishing widely, our faculty are prominent both in professional associations in their disciplines and as public commentators on global affairs.

The Department continues to host a rich menu of activities and prominent speakers on timely topics in the Middle East, China, Latin America and the European Union.  These events draw student and faculty participants from across the University of Oklahoma campus and from the broader public.

The number of IAS majors continues to rise steadily as students are attracted by the Department's dedicated faculty, well-structured curriculum, quality advising, and shared sense of purpose in engaging an ever-more globalizing world.   And the accomplishments of IAS students grow as students acquire language skills, study abroad, undertake internships and win prestigious awards -- all in preparation for careers in the Foreign Service or other federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, or further graduate study.

During the next few years, we anticipate ongoing expansion in our undergraduate and Master's programs.  We also expect to add more world-class faculty in critical areas, to continue to review and strengthen our curriculum, and to innovate in our international and area studies programming.  Collectively, these aspirations will contribute to our goal of enhancing the regional and national reputation of a dynamic Department.
