    Admiral William J. Crowe, Jr. Award

    Walter Allison is the recipient of the Admiral William J. Crowe, Jr. Award.  This award recognizes the most outstanding IAS graduate every year.  

    Ambassador Edward J. Perkins Scholarship

    Congratulations to Molly Marie Bachmann, Emily Farris, and Andy Tofa, recipients of the Ambassador Edward J. Perkins Scholarship.  

    The Ambassador Edward J. Perkins Scholarship was created to assist University of Oklahoma students to pursue studies in Africa and other strategic areas. Students from overseas may also be supported to come to the University of Oklahoma for study (see details regarding admissions for international students).  This fund was established in the memory of the late Marjorie Schenfeld Stewart.

    This award supports student travel to underrepresented overseas destinations.  The award amount is variable depending on student costs.

    Millie Schafer Sitzman Award

    The Millie Schafer Sitzman Award was created to assist University of Oklahoma students to pursue studies in Africa. The Award is given on a competitive basis to qualified undergraduate and graduate students.

    International Programs Research Paper Prize

    This award is given to the International and Area Studies major, minor or graduate student who writes the best research paper on African, Arabic, East Asian or Luso-Brazilian literature or culture.  The winner receives a $250 cash prize and will automatically be submitted for consideration to the SCMLA for the organization’s annual conference, which is typically held in the fall.

    College of International Studies Community Leadership Award

    The College of International Studies Community Leadership Award is given to a member of the campus or community who has displayed an extraordinary commitment to promoting the cause of internationalism.

    International and Area Studies Outstanding Senior Award

    The International and Area Studies Outstanding Senior Award is given for outstanding achievement in scholarship, honors, awards, leadership and service to the university and community.

    Thomas W. Adams Best Paper Award

    The Thomas W. Adams Best Paper Award is a contest for the best paper that addresses any aspect of conflict resolution, affecting any country that borders the Mediterranean Sea.

    Latin American Studies Best Paper Award

    The Latin American Studies Best Paper Award is a contest for the best paper on any Latin American topic.

    P.I.G. Scholarship

    The Prepare for International Giving (P.I.G.) scholarship was created by the College of International Studies to assist University of Oklahoma students interested in pursuing studies abroad. The total amount of the scholarship is to be determined at the conclusion of the P.I.G. fundraiser and is contingent on the total amount of funds raised.

    The Jim Grillot Photographer International Photo Award has been named to honor Jim Grillot, who was a professional photographer in Oklahoma
    for more than 30 years. The father of Dean Suzette Grillot, Jim Grillot was always a major supporter of his daughter’s international work and would have loved to encourage young photographers to employ their creative eye in a global setting.

    William W. Talley, II Award

    Dr. Emily Rook Koepsel is the recipient of the William W. Talley, II Award.  This award is given every spring in even-numbered years (2010/2012/2014) to an undergraduate alum of the Department of International and Area Studies who is currently enrolled in (or has been admitted and plans to attend) the Masters degree program in International Studies at the University of Oklahoma. The Award amount is $2,500.

    In odd numbered years, (2011/2013/2015) the Talley Award honors a faculty member for excellence in teaching and academic service to students in the Department of International and Area Studies.

    This award recognizes 1-3 IAS students every year for academic achievement and service – minimum $500 cash award.

    St. Elijah's and Anthony Shadid Award

    This award ecognizes the most outstanding IAS Middle East Studies student every year for Arabic language training.  The minimum $500 cash award is expected to be used to support student’s travel to the Middle East.

    Percy Buchanon Award

    The Percy Buchanon Award was created by Professor Sidney Brown, emeritus professor of Japanese History. The award is named in honor of Percy Buchanon, another former OU professor of Asian Studies who inspired many students during his teaching career. Many former students of Professors Buchanon and Brown have contributed to the endowment that makes this award possible. We would like to express a heartfelt thank you to all those generous donors.

    The Percy Buchanon Scholarship is awarded annually to the most deserving student in the Department of International and Area Studies, specializing in Asian Studies. Individuals may be nominated by the faculty in the department. The amount of the award is $1500.

    Arabic Flagship Scholarship

    Students undergo rigorous testing in hopes of gaining an opportunity to study at Flagship’s partner university in Alexandria, Egypt. These students will enroll in university courses in Arabic, work at an internship, and be paired with language and academic partners who will play a supporting role in their linguistic and cultural gains. This year, the Flagship Program is awarding each student a scholarship of $15,000 to help cover the costs of the year abroad.

    The College of International Studies provides funds to encourage and sup- port IAS undergraduate and graduate internship opportunities. Students receive a $2500 internship grant for travel and housing support related to international internship activities.

    Journal of Global Affairs Editors' Choice Award

    The Journal of Global Affairs Editors’ Choice Award is granted to one indi- vidual in each publication volume whose manuscript is comprised of extraordinary scholarship and research, contains insight into a unique or underrepresented topic, is masterful of language and easily communicates its topic, and inspires continued interest in the field of International and Area Studies.

    Iranian Studies Best Paper Prize

    The OU Iranian Studies Program awards a $250 prize for the best undergrad- uate research paper on a topic in the area of Iranian Studies. Papers may focus on any topic or time-period relating to the history, culture, politics, and society of Iran and the Persian-speaking world.

    College of International Studies Outstanding Staff Award

    The College of International Studies Outstanding Staff Award is given to one member of the CIS staff that displays outstanding service to the College during the academic year.

    2011 Award Winners

    Admiral William J. Crowe, Jr. Award

    Misheala Giddings is the 2011 recipient of the Admiral William J. Crowe, Jr. Award.  This award recognizes the most outstanding IAS graduate every year.  Cherrie plans to join Teach for America, spending two years in the inner-city school districts of Los Angeles, California before attending law school for international law with a focus on human rights. The Admiral William J. Crowe, Jr. Award will be presented at a luncheon on May 14, 2010.

The Award amount is $2,500.

    Ten to fifteen need-based scholarships are available for students who have attended OU all of the previous year as a full time student and are currently enrolled full time.

    Paul and Rose Sharp Scholarship

    This is a scholarship established by former OU President and his wife, Dr. Paul Sharp and Mrs. Rose Sharp, to recognize outstanding international students based on academic excellence and service to the University community. This scholarship is given to one student each spring term. Finalists may be interviewed.

    Sue Williams Service Award and Scholarship

    The Sue Williams Service Award is a service-based scholarship and is awarded to the student who demonstrates service to the community and dedication to intercultural understanding through Friends to International Students (FIS).
