AEJMC Midwinter Conference
March 6-7, 2015
The AEJMC Midwinter Conference is an annual forum for the presentation of research and debate in areas relevant to the 10 AEJMC groups (divisions, interest groups and commissions) sponsoring the event. The conference provides a platform for presentations and extended discussions in a relaxed setting.
The upcoming conference is scheduled for March 6-7, 2015 at the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication (University of Oklahoma) in Norman, Oklahoma. Conference participants will be able to enjoy the College’s state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities, as well as many winter diversions outside the conference activities, including world-class museums and art galleries.
Opening Night Reception
Friday, March 6
Gaylord College faculty and graduate students invite AEJMC Midwinter participants to an evening of wine, refreshments and contemporary art at MAINSITE by the Norman Arts Council featuring Abstract Abstract and Evanescent Iridescence.
Abstract Abstract is a collection of small-scale abstract works, curated by Tim Stark, that includes 40 pieces by 11 artists from across the country: Josh Aster, Elise Dietrich, David Kelley, Chris Kuhn, Jacob Melchi, Ellen Moershel, Lester Monzon, Stark, Brad Stevens, Greta Svalberg and Sungwon Yun. It serves to spotlight the breadth and depth of small-scale abstraction in contemporary painting, challenging artists to work quickly and decisively while giving a focus on craft and detail rarely seen in extra large abstraction.
Evanescent Iridescence, an exhibit featuring an array of paintings and altarpieces by artist John Bruce of Chickasha, highlights the interplay between color and texture, both of which vary depending upon the vantage point of the viewer. A variety of materials — especially pumice, perlite, and vermiculite — create textural variety and a sense of depth in Bruce’s acrylic paintings.
