The International Programs office in the Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy assists faculty and students with international education opportunities. The outreach office works in conjunction with OU’s Office of Education Abroad to promote partnerships with universities overseas and provide study abroad programs for MCEE students.
The goal of the MCEE study abroad programs is to provide students with an important lifelong experience. To fully do so, it is important for the students to be immersed in different cultures. The first of our successful faculty-led study programs began in 2011 with a week-long trip to the Amazon followed in 2012 with a 12-day trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Students come away with not only an enhanced academic experience but a greater global perspective and true appreciation for life back home. They have the opportunity to learn and practice a foreign language, interact with colleagues from other countries, and experience personal growth and develop leadership skills which will aid them in their future professional life.
In May 2013, 11 students, along with petroleum engineering faculty member Deepak Devegowda and Yoana Walschap traveled to Santa Cruz, Bolivia, to take Dr. Devegowda’s Improved Recovery Techniques (PE 4543).
(These faculty-led programs are being used as a model for study abroad opportunities for students in our college. Read more at http://www.ou.edu/content/dam/mcee/magazine/MCEE-MagazineFall12.pdf#page=25).
The International Programs office also coordinates, through the Energy Institute of the Americas, conferences, short courses and international video-conferences, and promotes other activities that enhance the international experience for our students and faculty. The activities in Latin America are facilitated through its extensive network of contacts in the Western Hemisphere established in 1995.
International alumni can visit the OU Alumni Association website to find international alumni clubs affiliated with OU. For more information, contact Dave Hail in the office of Alumni Affairs at (405) 325-1710 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
