And, So, But at the Beginnings of Sentences

Example:  I finished my essay.  But I wasn’t satisfied with it.

Five methods to revise this sentence:

1. Omit And, So, or But

Example:  I finished my essay.  I wasn’t satisfied with it.

2. Omit And, So, or But and use a ;

Example:  I finished my essay; I wasn't satisfied with it.

3. Substitute a transitional expression (Keys for Writers p. 249)

Example:  I finished my essay.  However, I wasn’t satisfied with it.

4. Use the conjunction in its usual position in a compound sentence:

Example:  I finished my essay, but I wasn’t satisfied with it.

5. Use a subordinating conjunction ( Keys for Writers p. 249) instead:

Example:  Although I finished my essay, I wasn’t satisfied with it.
