Features of a Good Essay (from class 1/27)
A good argument essay :
-is thought provoking
-has a strong, clear, and arguable position
-has good structure--developed support in a logical order
-has lots of strong reasons to support the thesis (or position statement)
-addresses all opposing views
-includes the author’s unique perspective using personal experience
-carefully considers the order of reasons
-has strongly persuasive evidence to support the reasons
-presents both sides of the argument fully
-thoroughly responds to opposing views
(-never concedes to opposing views you cannot defeat well--focus research
better)?
-doesn't lose credibility by putting the author above others or by
sounding selfish
-caters to the audience in the introduction
-includes background info for audience
-has a good, solid, strong conclusion that is a separate part of the
essay
-has a conclusion that reflects the position statement
well
