Language or Cultural Discovery Essay Syllabus

The dates on this syllabus have been revised since the snow day break!

Jan. 26 Assign the Essay, Invention
Assignment:  Begin reading p. 57-67 in your packet on Describing.

Jan. 31 Invention Techniques
Assignment:  Read the sample essays on p.44-56 in your packet. Write a revision letter using the guidelines on p. 68 in your packet for the author of the essay you are assigned.  Sample letters are on p. 69-72.

Feb. 2 Sample Revision Group Work
Assignment: Find effective examples of Naming, Detailing, Comparisons, and Sensory Description in the sample essays on p. 44-56.  Be prepared to share these with the class.

Feb. 4 Naming, Detailing, and Sensory Description
Assignment: Describe in detail one of the people or a place or an action that is related to your discovery. Use as many of the techniques that we have discussed as you can.

Feb. 7 Essay Criteria
Assignment: Write the first draft of your Language or Cultural Discovery essay.  Write it in ink or type it, and bring ______ copies of it to the next class.

Feb. 9 Exchange Essays
Assignment: Read the 2 essays your classmates have written.  Write a complete revision letter for each of your classmates using the guidelines on p. 68 in your packet.  Bring two copies of each letter that you write. You must bring the letters for your classmates to the next class.

Feb. 11 Revision Group work.  Discuss the responses to your classmates' essays.
 Assignment: Complete the Revision Group Response on p. 73 in your packet.
Write a dialogue that is related to the essay you are writing. Your dialogue could be between people in your essay or the words you said to yourself during the events you are describing.  Consult          p. 341-343 in Keys for Writers for information about using quotation marks. Pick up the Writing Center handout on using dialogue.  The Writing Center is in room 209 Physical Sciences Center.
Keep the letters your classmates wrote to you because you will submit them with your final draft of this essay.

Feb. 14 Share dialogues.  Beginnings.
Assignment: Write another beginning for your essay.  Write a second draft of your Language or Cultural Discovery essay and bring ______ copies of it to the next class.

Feb. 16 Exchange Essays. Special Concerns.
Assignment: Read the two essays your classmates have written.  Write a complete revision letter for each essay that you read using the guidelines on p. 74. Bring two copies of each letter that you write to the next class. Remember that these letters must be ready to share at the next class.

Feb. 18 Revision Group Discussions
Assignment:  Complete the Revision Group Response on p. 73 in your packet.  Bring a copy of your most recent draft of this essay to the next class.
Keep the letters your classmates wrote to you because you will submit them with your final draft of this essay on Feb. 23.

Feb. 21 Proofreading
Assignment:  Complete your Language or Cultural Discovery essay.  Bring two typewritten copies of the essay to the next class.  Remember to just staple these pages together--don't use a plastic cover or folder. Also bring copies of both drafts of this essay and all of the letters that you received. (There should be 5 letters in all).

Feb. 23 Your Language or Cultural Discovery Essay is due in class TODAY.
Assignment:  Answer the self-analysis question on p. 19 in your packet about your experiences writing the Language or Cultural Discovery essay.  Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.  This self-analysis will help you write your final exam in May so please respond to these questions thoroughly and thoughtfully.
