Syllabus for the First Weeks*
Jan. 10 Course Introductions
 Assignment:  Buy the textbook. Buy the packet. Read the Policy Statement in your packet.  Bring a list to the next class of all the questions you have about the course and its policies. This list will be your first written assignment for this class.  Complete the personal profile form that is at the back of the packet and submit it at the next class.
 
For Wednesday, January 19: Prepare an essay describing the best or worst writing experience you’ve ever had.  Write about the whole process you used to complete the assignment.  Include your feelings about the process you used, the assignment, and the finished essay.  Where did you get the ideas for the essay?  Prepare this essay the way you think a university-level essay should be prepared.  Bring 2 typed copies of  this essay to class on Jan. 19.  Be sure to proofread it carefully yourself.

Jan. 12  Introductions continued
 Assignment:  Continue working on the essay due on Jan. 19

Jan. 14   Finish Introductions
Assignment:  Bring 2 typed copies of your finished essay to class on Jan. 19.  Be sure you carefully proofread this essay yourself.   Prepare for a policy statement quiz on Jan. 19.

Assignment:  Read about Avoiding Biased Language on p. 232-235 and 309-310 in Keys for Writers.  Complete the practice exercise on p.    in your packet.

Jan. 21 Avoiding Biased Language
Assignment: Write a page or more about your secrets to successful essay writing. How do you get started?  What do you do next?  What do you do just before the essay is due?  What do you do when you get stuck?

Jan. 24  Writing Process Activities, Attitude Survey
 Assignment:  Write a page responding to one of the attitudes you expressed on the survey we did in class today.
