Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art Unveils Matisse Loan

NORMAN, OKLA. – The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art has much to give thanks for, including a new Henri Matisse sculpture on temporary loan from a private collector. Through Feb. 14, 2012, museum visitors get a rare chance to view Vénus à la Coquille I, one of only two sculptures Matisse cast of this subject. The bronze sculpture depicts the goddess Venus ascending from the water on a half-shell. Completed in 1930 and cast in 1954, this sculpture is an example of Matisse’s radically stylized figure modeling that was central to his artistic production during this moment in his career.

FJJMA Offers Free Family Weekend With Films, Cartoonists, Art Activities Nov. 18-20

NORMAN, OKLA. – A fun weekend of free films, special guests and art activities has been planned at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art. Beginning Friday, Nov. 18, the art museum on the University of Oklahoma Norman campus is offering three days of events, including free screenings of Project Nim and Disney’s Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension, plus art discussions and hands-on activities.

Stuart Wing Opening Yields Weekend of Free Activities Oct. 20-23

NORMAN, OKLA. – The opening of the new Stuart Wing at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art promises four days packed with exciting, free activities for visitors Oct. 20 through 23. The weekend culminates in a free community celebration with live entertainment, artist demonstrations and more from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23.

OU Art Museum Opens New Stuart Wing Oct. 22

NORMAN, OKLA. – Four years of planning, construction and preparations are about to pay off when the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art at the University of Oklahoma opens its new Stuart Wing to the public on Saturday, Oct. 22, followed by a special community celebration from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23. Admission is free to the public both days.

OU Art Museum Launches New Rauschenberg Exhibition Sept. 30


NORMAN, OKLA. – As excitement builds for the opening of the new Stuart Wing at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art at the University of Oklahoma this fall, the museum debuts a new exhibition of modern art. Robert Rauschenberg: Prints from Universal Limited Art Editions, 1962-2008 opens at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, at the museum. A guest lecture by Mary Lynn Kotz, biographer and author of Rauschenberg: Art and Life (2004, Harry N. Abrams, Inc.) will precede the opening reception at 6 p.m.

OU Welcomes Collaborative Printmaking Duo, Satan's Camaro

NORMAN, OKLA. (September 12, 2011) – "Screen-printing has been the backbone of the OU print department for over three decades,” says associate printmaking professor Curtis Jones. “Having a collaborative duo of contemporary printmakers working in the medium will display how this process is still current and being utilized by artist's today.”

Campus Area Art Challenge Puts Art Lovers to the Test This Fall

NORMAN, OKLA. – Art enthusiasts can now add some friendly competition to their routine every second Friday of the month in Norman. This fall, the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art is participating in the Campus Area Art Challenge in conjunction with the Norman Arts Council’s 2nd Friday Circuit of Art and the museum’s Art “à la Carte” monthly programming. The first Campus Area Art Challenge starts Friday, Sept. 9.

Art Museum Fuses Music, Art in Weekly Series

NORMAN, OKLA. – Music and art lovers can blend culture with their Tuesday lunch hour at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art. The museum’s free weekly Tuesday Noon Concerts series kicks off Sept. 13 in the Sandy Bell Gallery.

For the Love of Art

NORMAN, OKLA. – Don Walp was many things during his lifetime. Soldier, artist, author, landscape architect. But perhaps the title for which he is best known is friend. When Walp died in Dallas in April 2010, he left behind a legion of friends he had collected like precious works of art during his 100 years. One to which he was especially loyal was the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art.

New Art Installation Features Live Music, Guests at FJJMA

NORMAN, OKLA. – The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art is celebrating the reinstallation of modern art with the help of some new friends. Austin band White Denim and guest speaker Bill Goldston, director of Universal Limited Art Editions New York, are just a few of the guests scheduled for the exhibition opening, which starts at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 4. Several events are planned for the evening, which is free and open to the public.

OU Museums to Participate in Blue Star Museums


NORMAN, OKLA. – Today the Sam Noble Museum and the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, both on the University of Oklahoma Norman campus, announced the launch of Blue Star Museums, a partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, and more than 1,300 museums across America to offer free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2011. Luncheon On The Grass Event Returns May 22 at Lions Park

NORMAN, OKLA. – Four of Norman’s powerhouse arts organizations are joining forces for another fun afternoon in the park. The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, Firehouse Art Center, Jacobson House NativeArt Center and Norman Arts Council are teaming up to present the second annual Luncheon on the Grass, a free picnic scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 22, at Lions Park.

Free Museum Symposium on April 7 to Tackle Mediterranean Turmoil


NORMAN, OKLA. – In light of a new exhibition, the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art invites the public to a free, public symposium Thursday, April 7, focusing on the political turmoil in the Mediterranean region. Riots, Unrest and Democracy in the Mediterranean will be held at 3:30 p.m. in room 128 of Catlett Music Center, located west of the museum.

Chinese Teapot Collection Exhibit Opens April 1 at FJJMA


NORMAN, OKLA. – Following a major gift of Native American art by private collector James T. Bialac a year ago, the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art debuts a new exhibition of contemporary Chinese teapots from Bialac’s collection.

FJJMA Visits 19th Century Mediterranean Cutlure With New Exhibition


NORMAN, OKLA. – A new exhibition at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art looks at Mediterranean culture through the eyes of 19th century American painters. Mediterranea: American Art from the Graham D. Williford Collection opens with a free reception at 7 p.m. Friday, March 4, at the FJJMA at the University of Oklahoma. A special guest lecture by Charles C. Eldredge will accompany the exhibition’s opening reception at 6 p.m. Association members and the public are invited.

NORMAN, OKLA. – While some may scoff at the idea of living behind a mask, Susan Contreras takes a different approach. With hundreds of Mexican festival masks in her private collection, the Santa Fe artist not only embraces the idea of masks, she incorporates them into her large, playful paintings.

Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art Calls for Additional Docents

NORMAN, OKLA. – In anticipation of an exciting new year, the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art is expanding its docent program. The museum currently is looking for volunteers who guide visitors of all ages through the museum. Prior knowledge of art is not required—applicants just need an enthusiasm for learning and for sharing knowledge with others.
