Thomas Brent Smith Named Director of OU’s Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art


NORMAN –  The University of Oklahoma announced today the appointment of Thomas Brent Smith as Wylodean and Bill Saxon Director of the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, pending OU Board of Regents’ approval.  An OU alumnus who has built a distinguished career in museum leadership, Smith will return to his alma mater on Nov. 1 from the Denver Art Museum, where he serves as director of the Petrie Institute of Western American Art. In this role, he has led the Petrie Institute to unprecedented growth and national stature by spearheading a $7 million endowment campaign and transforming the institute’s holdings by acquiring multiple important collections, including one of the most valuable gifts of art in the museum’s history.

Photography Exhibition Exploring Nuclear History Opens at OU Art Museum


NORMAN –  A new exhibition featuring acclaimed American photographer Patrick Nagatani’s (1945-2017) portfolio that addresses nuclear testing, waste and history in the state of New Mexico opens Thursday, Aug. 5, at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, located on the University of Oklahoma Norman campus. Nuclear Enchantment, a series of 40 images created by the artist between 1988 and 1993, plays upon New Mexico’s motto as the “Land of Enchantment” to raise awareness of the effects of the nuclear industry on the state’s land and people. This is the first time the entire series has been exhibited in Oklahoma.

Renowned Art Historian's Collection Goes on Display at Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art


 

NORMAN –  Creighton Gilbert (1924-2011), a scholar and connoisseur of Italian Renaissance art donated his extensive collection to the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art in 2011. Opening Thursday, June 24, A Life in Looking: The Creighton Gilbert Collection explores the thematic elements that make up this exceptional collection.

107th Annual Student Exhibition Opens at OU


 

NORMAN –   After hosting a virtual exhibition last year, the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art and the University of Oklahoma’s School of Visual Arts will celebrate student artistry once again at the museum. The 107th Annual OU School of Visual Arts Student Exhibition opens Thursday, April 22 in the museum’s Nancy Johnston Records Gallery and will be on display through Sunday, May 16.

New Exhibition at OU Art Museum Showcases “Pictorialism” Photography Movement


 

NORMAN –  A new exhibition that chronicles the beginning of the photography movement opened this month at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, located on the University of Oklahoma Norman campus. Long Exposure: A Century of Pictorialism examines the lasting effects on photography of the genre known as Pictorialism, which emerged in late 19th-century Europe.

OU Art Museum to Hold Virtual Event About OK Artist Ed Ruscha; Panelists to Include OKC Mayor Holt and Los Angeles Mayor Garcetti


 

NORMAN –  Artist Ed Ruscha and two current exhibitions of his work, OK/LA at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art and Ed Ruscha: OKLA at Oklahoma Contemporary, will be the subject of a virtual panel discussion set for 3 p.m. Friday, March 5. Panelists will include the curators of both exhibitions, OKC Mayor David Holt and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.
