In 1892, Toulouse-Lautrec received a commission to decorate a brothel in Paris on the rue d’Amboise. For that project, he painted imitations of eighteenth-century paneling that was inset with 16 medallion-shaped portraits, many in profile, of the prostitutes available on the premises. The present painting is one of those portraits.
