English Proficiency

The language of instruction at OU is English. Adequate English language skills are essential to academic success. If English is not your first language, you will be required to demonstrate English language proficiency before admission by doing one of the following:

  1. Scoring 79 or higher on the Internet-based TOEFL (iBT). Consistency across subsections will be examined. Generally, a minimum score of 20 is expected in each subsection (i.e., Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing)
  2. Scoring 6.5 or higher on the IELTS. Consistency across subsections will be examined. Generally, a minimum score of 6.0 is expected in each subsection (i.e., Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing).
  3. Scoring 60 or higher on Pearson's PTE Academic. Consistency across subsections will be examined. Generally, a minimum score of 55 is expected in each subsection (i.e., the communicative skills of Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing).
  4. Scoring a 115 or higher on the DET (Duolingo English Test) AND submitting qualifying test scores for OU admission from one of the above English proficiency tests (i.e., TOEFL iBT, IELTS, or PTE Academic) that are expired by no more than 6 months. Applicants can only take the DET twice per admissions cycle, and consistency across subsections will be examined. Generally, a minimum score of 105 is expected in each subsection (i.e., literacy, comprehension, conversation, and production).
  5. Completing at least 24 credit hours at an accredited college or university in the United States or an OU-approved, English-speaking country.
  6. Earning a bachelor’s degree (or higher) at an accredited university in the United States or an OU-approved, English-speaking country.
  7. Successfully completing the OU Track intensive English language program at OU's Center for English as a Second Language (CESL)
  8. Successfully completing the Graduate English Pathway Program (GEP) at OU's CESL.

Not all countries which have English listed as an official language are considered exempt from English proficiency requirements. See the list of OU-Approved, English-Speaking Countries.

Test scores expire after two years, so scores over two years old by the beginning of the term in which you wish to start are not accepted.
