Bushra Asif is the Associate Director of Programs at the Graduate College, and part of this role involves administering the English Training and Certification Services (ETCS) Program. Bushra's ETCS responsibilities include managing ETCS’s day to day operations and assisting students during the process of English assessment and certification.
Originally from Pakistan, Bushra has a Master’s degree in Development Studies from the University of Cambridge (UK). She is a doctoral candidate (ABD) in the Department of Political Science at the University of Chicago where her dissertation research has focused on Gender Laws promulgation and reform in authoritarian settings. Bushra has worked extensively in Pakistan and in the US on South Asian security and development, gender rights, and the role of Islam in Pakistan. Her research interests include women’s rights in the developing world, South Asian politics and society, and the politics of family and gender laws.
For the past 5 years Bushra has worked in higher education focusing on student advising, post graduate career development, student recruitment and support, and scholarship mentoring/advising. Prior to joining the Graduate College in 2020, she was OU’s Fulbright and Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) advisor.
In addition to assisting the ETCS program, Bushra works with OK-LSAMP scholars and is involved with the Accelerate to Industry (A2i) program. She is also an adjunct instructor in the Department of International and Area Studies where she teaches courses on women’s rights in the developing world.
Bushra lives in Norman with her husband, Aqil Shah, and her two children Sahir and Rania.
