Peer Educator Advice!

Know how much you will drink while you are out and do not exceed the limit you set for yourself. Also, know where you are going and how you are going to get home. Having a designated thinker can be just as important as a Designated Driver. Since drinking alcohol affects your judgment and decision-making, have at least one friend who is not consuming alcohol. Stay with the same group of friends the entire time when drinking socially and socialize with people you know and trust!

Only consume alcohol you buy or bring yourself and do not accept drinks from anyone in the event they are laced with a date rape drug such as ketamine or Rohypnol.

Give your body a chance to respond to alcohol consumption. Remember your liver can only metabolize one (1) standard drink per hour! Try alternating every alcoholic beverage with a non-alcoholic beverage, and eat before and during drinking.

Alcohol poisoning occurs when you are quickly consuming alcohol in a short amount of time. A single solo cup of a high alcohol volume mystery drink such as “Trashcan punch” could contain the equivalent of 5 or more shots of alcohol. When you are drinking at this rate, your body does not have a chance to respond, or even give you signals, that you are poisoning yourself.

You are not alone if you choose not to drink! It does not mean you have to avoid your friends or social interactions. You just might be that designated thinker that helps someone else stay out of harm’s way.
