911 Texting Now Available for OU Campus

The University of Oklahoma Police Department is now able to receive texts to 911. This service does not replace traditional 911 calling, but is designed to assist people with disabilities and callers who need to remain discreet. The texting mechanism also allows an alternative communication method during certain medical emergencies that disable a caller from talking.

To send a text to emergency services, text 911 with the location of the emergency, and a dispatcher will reply with instructions or questions. Do not send emojis or slang, as the service cannot read them.

Texting to 911 should only be used under situations where calling is not possible. Dispatchers encourage traditional calling as the quickest way to access emergency help. Text to 911 only applies to the Norman area at this time.
