Research and Partnerships Names New Appointments

The University of Oklahoma Norman campus continues to make immense strides in building research with two new appointments. Randy Hewes was named senior associate vice president for research and partnerships and Ann West was named associate vice president for research and partnerships; both appointments are pending Board of Regents’ approval.

During Hewes’ tenure as interim vice president for research, new grants and contracts for FY19 were up $26 million above the previous record – totaling $162 million for the Norman campus.

Hewes will hold dual roles. He will maintain his position as dean of the Graduate College to ensure there is a continued close coordination of research and graduate education initiatives.

Hewes graduated magna cum laude from Carleton College with a bachelor of arts degree in biology and a doctoral degree in zoology from the University of Washington in Seattle. He joined the OU biology faculty in 2001.

West brings a vast amount of research and grant administration experience to this new role, having served as a faculty fellow in the Office of the Vice President for Research this past year.

She earned her bachelor of arts degree in biology from Wesleyan University and her doctoral degree in genetics from Yale University. West gained further research training in protein biochemistry and structural biology as a Jane Coffin Childs postdoctoral fellow at Rutgers University. She joined the OU faculty in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in 1996.

The Office of the Vice President for Research and Partnerships also launched the OU Research Distinguished Lecture Series. The Series will host highly distinguished speakers who can speak to the OU family about prominent global issues. Distinguished Professor Valdimir Shalaev of Purdue University will launch the series.

Research and Partnerships wants your help developing a list of potential speakers by providing your input to Melany Dickens-Ray at mdickens@ou.edu by Nov. 15 for the fall semester, and no later than Dec.15 for spring semester.
