Cap Decorating, Chant Singing and More: Virtual Commencement Invites Participation

OU is planning a memorable Virtual Commencement Ceremony with multiple ways for graduates to personalize their celebration and contribute to the festivities from afar.

Cap Decorating Contest

Decorating one’s graduation cap has become a way for many students to express themselves on their big day.

This year, graduating students have the chance to win prizes as part of a cap decorating contest.

Photos of decorated caps must be submitted by Friday, May 1, to be entered into the contest. The top six caps will receive OU class rings and classic diploma frames, provided by Jostens. The top 16 caps will be included in a social media contest on OU’s Instagram page at @uofoklahoma. Voting will begin on Instagram on Monday, May 4. Anyone can follow along and vote.

Don’t have a cap? No worries. Enter the contest by decorating a 9.5” X 9.5” flat square, leaving a 1” diameter circle in the middle to accommodate the button.

All cap submissions will be compiled into a video, and the contest winners will be announced following the virtual ceremony.

Video Submissions: OU Chant and Oklahoma!

One of the university’s Commencement traditions is to conclude the ceremony by singing the OU Chant and Oklahoma! together as the OU family. The Virtual Commencement Ceremony will be no different, but we need the members of the Class of 2020 to help to pull this off.

Graduates are encouraged to wear their caps and gowns and record a video of themselves singing these classic spirit songs. Videos can be uploaded here.

Submitted videos will be edited together by Professor Scott Hodgson’s Advertising Production class for inclusion in the ceremony.

Individual Recognition Slide

Students who register for the Virtual Commencement Ceremony may create a personalized recognition slide, which can be displayed and read aloud during the virtual ceremony. More information about individual recognition slides and virtual ceremony registration is available here.

Celebration Boxes

Celebration boxes contain items to help graduates make the most of their personal celebration during Virtual Commencement. The boxes will be sent to each graduating student who indicates they would like one.

Graduation candidates can register to participate in the virtual ceremony by clicking the unique registration link that was emailed to them, or they can contact commencement@ou.edu. The deadline for registration is Monday, April 27.

More information about OU’s Virtual Commencement Ceremony is available at ou.edu/commencement.
