Reading is a vital part of an education, and the best time to cultivate a lifelong love of reading is during childhood. To help instill the joy of reading, and as part of its Black History Month celebration, the OU-Tulsa community collected and donated 259 new and gently used books for local schoolchildren.

During the month of February, book drive collection boxes were placed across the OU-Tulsa campus, and dozens of individuals donated children’s books for Pre-K to 5th-grade readers. Many community members also purchased new books from an Amazon wish list, which were delivered directly to campus.

The book drive, led by the OU-Tulsa Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Staff Senate and the OU-Tulsa Race Massacre Initiatives Committee, culminated with the delivery of books to Tulsa Public Schools’ Dolores Huerta Elementary just in time for National Read Across America Day on March 2.
