Urban Design Celebrates

30 Years in Tulsa

The Urban Design Studio at OU-Tulsa recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. Urban Design is only offered in Tulsa and is a creative discipline integrating aspects of architecture, city planning, civil engineering, landscape architecture and real estate development.

Each year, Urban Design students work on a community collaboration project on an area in need of development and/or beautification. Last year, the project was to bring world-renowned art to downtown Tulsa.  A Stickwork sculpture designed by noted artist Patrick Dougherty, was unveiled at the Chapman Green Park in downtown Tulsa at 6th and Main. OU-Tulsa students helped the Urban Core Art Project efforts to revitalize the space. Students coordinated community volunteers and helped build the piece. If you’re in Tulsa, it’s a must-see!

OU-Tulsa’s Urban Design Studio, a program through the College of Architecture, is the only one of its kind in Oklahoma. The graduate degree program is now a Master of Urban Design (MUD). The college is now also offering a Certificate of Design Entrepreneurship & Real Estate. These two programs are run by Shawn Schaefer, director of the Urban Design Studio at OU-Tulsa.
