Objectives

Communicate with other class members and instructor by using the Canvas homepage tools (such as email, chat, discussion board, etc.)
Complete a survey.
Send or receive files to or from the instructor using the class homepage site.
Research a learning theory about distance instruction.
Share the selected topic to peer students.

Learning Activities

1. Create your personal home page on the class homepage. (1 point)

If you have taken my other class and completed this task, you can skip it.
Prepare your personal photo file. You can use your personal photo file or the one found at the "Class photo page" link under the Pages area of the course homepage. Download your photo image onto your hard drive if needed.
Go to your personal profile page by clicking on your photo icon (or empty icon if you didn't upload your photo) on the left-top corner of the class homepage.
Click on the "Profile" link and again "Edit Profile" link. It will bring up your profile page with editable fields.
Click on photo area to upload your personal photo if you don't see yours.
Once finished with photo upload, edit the following information:
- Your name if necessary
- Your short biography (school or work information)
- Uner the Links, include three favorite website URLs you like.
Click on Save Profile to update the information (without clicking on save button, the content won't be saved!!).

2. Survey Completion (1 points)

Go to the following site and complete the Course Pre-assessment Survey.

3. Group Chat (2 points)

Within your Peer Group, set up a time to chat with each other any time before the assignment due date.
Peer group formation is as follows:
- Group A: Aidan, Heather, James
- Group B: Torrie, Emily, Angela
- Group C: Julieta, Michelle, Carter, Jay
- Group D: Julia, Mookie, Gavin, Brooklin
You can contact your peer group members by clicking the person's name under the People area. When you click on it, you will see an email icon in the popup side page. Please share you group's contact information (email, phone numbers) during this activity. Once you develop group's contact information sheet, group leader should send it to the instructor by email (dhlim@ou.edu). For this, elect your group leader during the chat activity.
For group chat, go to the Conference area under your group page. Each group page can be found under the People->Groups->your group name (Group A or B).
Once you set up a time and start the group chat on that date, click on the BigBlueButton menu under your group's homepage and conference name titled "First chat assignment - Group A or B" link). Click on "Start" button.
Practice the following topics with your group members using the chat function and collaboration window (about 15 minutes).
In doing group chat, don't forget to click on the record button for my later review of your chat activity.
- Your first impression of the course.
- Discussion of your interest in distance learning.
- Strengths/short comings of using the collaboration fuction during distance learning.
- Share your hobbies with your group members.
- Decide who will be your group leader. The elected leader needs to report to the instructor your group members' contact information.
- Decide which learning theory each student will select to complete learning activity 6 as indicated below.
- Lastly, play a tic-tac-toe for fun among group members using the center collaboration window (using the line and circle drawing tools).
Once finished with the collaboration practice, write your impression about using the chat function in a MS Word document and save it as "chat_yourlastname".
Don't forget the location of the file where you saved the chat document. Follow the next section (Assignment Submission) to upolad the saved file to the instructor.

4. Assignment Submission (1 point)

Go to the Assignments area of the class homepage and click on "First chat impression dropbox" link.
Click on Start Assignment link
Under the File Upload tab, click on "Upload File" button and locate your file. Once selected, click on "Submit Assignment" button.

5. Discussion Board (1 point)

After you finish the group chat and file transfer practice, go to Discussions area of the class homepage.
Click on the "First chat experience" link.
Click on "Reply" link.
Write your message according to the thread instruction.
Click on "Post Reply" button.

6. Complete all above assignment activities by May 14.

7. Research a topic of learning theory from below list. Within your peer group, discuss to select a different topic among group members. Later, I want you to share your research paper with peers within your group. In researching your selected learning theory, prepare a two page report containing the following items. (5 points) (due by May 14)

Title of the learning theory and your name
Definitions and main concepts of the learning theory
Short history of the learning theory if you can find
Examples of using the learning theory in distance learning

Transformative learning
VR/AR based learning
Blended learning
Problem-based learning
Case-based learning
Neuroscience-based learning

Once all group members uploaded individual reports as illustrated below and read others' reports, please answer the following questions under your group homepage's discussions forum titled Learning Theory Discussion (Group A/B/C/D) (1 point). (due by May 15)

Which learning theory is most applicable to design a distance education program? Why?
Which learning theory is least applicable to design a distance education program? Why?

Format & submission of the report:

Use APA style.
Use organizational headings (report title, student name, course number-EDAH 5413)
Report length (2 pages)
Format (1.5 spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point)
Save your file as "Learning theory_lastname.docx".
Turn in your file under People->Groups->your group name (Group A/B/C/D)->Files Area->"Learning Theory" folder.
Click on the Upload button to submit your file.

Evaluation

This assignment is worth 12 points of your grade.
