International Programs

The International Programs office in the Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy has a dual purpose, to assist faculty and students with international education opportunities and to promote Professional Development opportunities to OU Alumni, Industry Professionals and other individuals both domestic and international.

The goal of the MCEE Study Abroad Programs is to provide students with an important lifelong experience.  To fully do so, it is important for the students to be immersed in different cultures.  The first of our successful faculty-led study programs began in 2011 with a week-long trip to the Amazon followed in 2012 with a 12-day trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina. We have regularly offered summer programs, and in 2018, we offered the first Winter Intersession program and Spring Session programs, and sent over 30 students to 5 different countries: Romania, Brazil, Spain, China and Colombia. Each year we add new courses and destinations, and work with host universities abroad to make the experience as immersive as possible. Students come away with an enhanced academic experience and a greater global perspective.  They have the opportunity to learn and practice a foreign language, interact with colleagues from other countries, and experience personal growth and develop leadership skills which will aid them in their future professional life.

Students have a variety of study abroad options, and can view current offerings on our Mewbourne College Study Abroad page. The office also works in conjunction with OU’s Office of Education Abroad to promote partnerships with universities abroad and provide semester long study abroad programs for MCEE students.

The International Programs office also coordinates the Energy Institute of the Americas.  The EIA offers conferences, short courses and international video-conferences, and promotes other activities that enhance the international experience for our students and faculty.  The activities in Latin America are facilitated through its extensive network of contacts in the Western Hemisphere established in 1995. In 2018, the Energy Institute of the Americas offers Professional Development Courses on Oil and Gas Shales on the University of Oklahoma Campus. These courses are eligible for CEU credits, and a Certificate of Attendance. For Summer 2019, Mewbourne College is working on a Certificate Program in the Evaluation and Development of Shale and Tight Plays.
