Price College team to compete in Americas Final after back-to-back wins in CFA Institute Research Challenge

Price College’s Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute Research Challenge team continues to rack up accolades.

The team, which comprises finance students Alex Holt, Rhett Manley and James Beers, won the Americas Semi-Final Round to advance to the Americas Final, set for April 28.

“Having won both the Oklahoma and Sub-Regional competitions, they’re already champions twice over,” said Chitru Fernando, Director of the Division of Finance and Rainbolt Chair in Finance. “Please join me in congratulating them on this tremendous accomplishment and wishing them all success in the Americas Final.”

This is the first year Price College has participated in this competition. However, team coach Jason Turkiela, who joined the Price faculty in 2021, has prior experience taking teams to the research challenge.

To put the Price team’s accomplishments in perspective, it is one of only three teams from U.S. universities that remain in the global competition, and it already has placed in the top 2% of teams competing this year, Fernando said.

In the Americas Final, the group will compete against five other teams for the Americas Championship. The Americas region includes the United States, Canada, Latin America and the Atlantic Islands. The Global Final is set for May 17.

The CFA Institute Research Challenge gives university students the opportunity to gain real-world experience by assuming the role of a research analyst.

Through the competition, students receive mentoring and training in financial analysis and professional ethics, according to the CFA Institute website. The competition tests students’ analytical, valuation, report writing and presentation skills.

Over 5,000 students, representing more than 900 universities from 91 countries, participate in the competition.

The CFA certification is the gold standard for portfolio managers and other finance professionals. There are over 180,000 CFA charter holders worldwide across 170 societies.
