BMAcc Student Emily Kamphuis Combines Nonprofit Minor with Accounting

Emily Kamphuis (in blue cap, on left), a fourth-year BMAcc student with a minor in nonprofit organizational studies, completed a “life-changing” summer internship at Living Waters International (LWI) in Houston, a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to “implement participatory, community-based water solutions in developing countries.” The highlight of her internship was a site visit to El Salvador, where Kamphuis and LWI staff celebrated with children upon completion of a new water well.

As an intern assisting the internal audit staff, Kamphuis quickly learned to navigate the challenges facing an international nonprofit (e.g., differences in time zones, languages) and was asked to write a report detailing how the internal audit process could be improved. She described the experience as “life-changing; I saw people being joyful in very difficult circumstances. Knowing I can combine my accounting expertise with my interest in Nonprofits is really exciting.”
