Price College of Business – E-News February 2021

Welcome

Corey Phelps - Dean, Price College of Business

Friends,

As spring semester gets underway, it brings with it a sense of hope for the future. While students have been weathering online classes and changes to on-campus protocols for nearly a year, including social distancing and masking measures, the prospect for vaccines and warmer weather seem just around the corner. It’s been a long haul, but the light at the end of the tunnel seems closer than ever. I am excited to share this growing sense of optimism with you, along with the latest news from the Price College of Business.

Undergraduate enrollment is up 14 percent this spring compared to last spring. All of our master’s programs that are at least a year old are nationally ranked, including our full-time and part-time MBA, our EMBA in Energy, our online Master in Accountancy (MAcc) and online master in Finance, our MS in Management of Information Technology, and our traditional MAcc. These are just a few examples of how our students, faculty and staff continue to gain ground, and I am proud of their hard work.

OU will hold six in-person graduation ceremonies on the Norman campus in May to honor its graduating students, whose academic experience has been extraordinarily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Price College will join two other colleges for a ceremony on Saturday, May 15, at the Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. In addition to the Class of 2021, OU will welcome back members of the Class of 2020 – whose graduations were celebrated virtually due to COVID-19 – to participate in the in-person ceremonies. Numerous safety measures will be incorporated into the ceremonies, including masking and physical distancing of graduates and guests.

Our Next Chapter

In my first seven months as Dean of Price College, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know the Price College family, including many of you, and learning a lot about Price, OU and Oklahoma. I’ve been impressed with what I’ve learned, and I am excited for our future.

The question I’ve been asked most often by members of the Price community is some variation of, “where is Price College headed?” I believe that now is the time to develop a comprehensive answer to this question.

Essential to the long-term success of a research-intensive business school like Price is a strategic plan that establishes a motivating and clear strategic direction for the future, a limited set of strategic priorities designed to realize the vision, and a set of measurable objectives linked to these priorities to guide decisions on resource allocation and activities.

I am thrilled to announce the launch of a new strategic planning effort for Price College.

The strategic planning process will address all that we do: academic programs and student engagement, teaching and research, and community engagement. We will be helped in the planning process by Juniper, a boutique strategy and innovation consultancy, and a team of talented students from our own Ronnie K. Irani Center for the Creation of Economic Wealth.

The planning process will be open and inclusive. We will provide multiple opportunities for you to engage and provide input into the strategic plan. Your voice, ideas, and critical insight will be central to the success of this effort. In the weeks to come, you will be invited to contribute your perspective through one of several means. Please be on the lookout for these announcements, and please plan to contribute.

I am excited about the future of Price College and I’m eager to begin working with you on this important endeavor to guide us to new levels of excellence and success. Together, we will build a brighter future for Price College.

Please take a moment to review our short video below, and please enjoy the latest news from our college. Thank you for your continued and unwavering support.

Louis Ederington (1944 - 2021)
Dr. Louis H. Ederington and his wife Anne

We are saddened to announce the recent passing of one of our Price College family members, Dr. Louis H. Ederington. Lou served Price College for more than 25 years, starting at OU in 1989 and retiring in 2014 as Michael F. Price Chair Emeritus and George Lynn Cross Professor Emeritus. A few months later, he returned part-time to continue doing what he loved most: mentoring and teaching Ph.D. students and conducting research. Many alumni and former colleagues have reached out with inspiring stories of Lou's scholarship, accomplishments, mentorship, and friendship. In 1995, Lou helped convince Michael Price to initiate the Student Investment Fund with a gift of $100,000, a student-led, experiential learning initiative that continues to this day. He was ranked among the 40 most prolific authors in the top seven finance journals and was ranked in the top 0.25% of authors on the Social Science Research Network in terms of paper requests. If you’d like to help continue Dr. Ederington's legacy, please consider making an online contribution to the Louis and Anne Ederington Fund, which benefits and supports Finance Ph.D. students.
