FIRST GENERAL MEETING
Date: Sep 10, 1997
Time: 7:00p
Place: Cate Social Lounge
Organization: OU-SEDS (Students for the Exploration and Development of Space, University of Oklahoma)
Type: General

Members Present
-Jennifer Chambers (President)
-Wendy Summersette (Vice-President)
-Lacey Holland (treasurer)
-Phillip Forkner (Secretary, Chapter Representative)

Topics Covered:
-Ideas for projects
-Future of SEDS
-Star Trek: First Contact
-Yogi the Bear
-Committee sign-up sheets

Brief Summary
Basically, this meeting was a get-to-know SEDS type meeting. There were a total of about ten people present and we mostly talked about what SEDS is and what we expect from it. Everyone showed a keen interest in astronomy and just space in general and we were all very excited about getting some projects started. Of course, there were the administrative details such as committee sign-up sheets.

Project Committee
Social/Fundraising
Publicity
Observatory
(There are still many openings so please feel free to sign up at the next meeting.)

Project ideas were tossed around and a few that came up were involvement in a Robot competition, inviting the public to learn some constellations, hosting observatory nights, and some other things which I can't remember (hee).

We noted that Yogi the bear is definitely an important figure and worthy of being named after a rock on Mars (or vice-versa).

Finally the meeting adjourned around 8:30p and we watched Star Trek: First Contact.

FIRST OFFICER'S MEETING
Date: Sep 21, 1997
Time: 3:00p
Place: La Baguette (nice place)
Organization: OU-SEDS (Students for the Exploration and Development of Space, University of Oklahoma)
Type: Officer

Members Present
-Jenifer Chambers (President)
-Wendy Summersette (Vice-President)
-Lacey Holland (Treasurer)
-Phillip Forkner (Secretary, Chapter Representative)

Minute forms were discussed and should follow this example. Mainly, minutes should contain Date, Time (including adjournment), Organization, Place, Type of meeting, and Members Present. And of course, the summary.

T-Shirt designs were also discussed. Sean, the T-shirt man, will be bringing several designs to the next general meeting (9/29) so that they may be voted upon. Members should feel free to bring their own designs. Designs will be composed of two colors (three if you include the color of the shirt) and will cost SEDS approximately $7.00 per shirt.

There was the topic of Fundraising. The few ideas we came up with are:
-T-shirts: $5.00 profit on 50 shirts (we hope) = $250.00
-Corporate sponsorhsip (Astronomics?)
-Night out under the stars.
-Car wash (yea!?)
-El Chicos
-Classic 50's
-Donation boxes at observations

It was decided that an information pack is direly needed. Something to give to interested persons so that they may know what we are about.

The agenda for the next general meeting (9/29) was discussed. This list is tentative
-Dr. William Romanishin (SEDS sponsor) will give a short lecture on near-earth astroid (collisions?) passings.
-Question and Answer period.
-committee sign-up sheets.
-Vote on T-shirt design.
-Dues.
-Halloween Party.

Finally, the meeting was adjourned at 4:15p.

Topics Covered
-T-shirts
-Projects
-Dues (and I'm not talking about hair doos!)
-lots of spacey stuff

Summary
Thanks to everyone who was able to make it. We had a showing of about 15 people which is pretty good for a second meeting. Those of you who didn't make it, there's still plenty of meetings coming up.

Again, we went around and introduced ourselves and talked more about space stuff. We are in need of some project ideas and there were quite a few thrown around although I can't remember them all. I promise to take better notes next time :) One idea which was met with much enthusiasm is getting an official SEDS telescope (dut duh duh duh). The plan is to get as much information as we can about purchasing a telescope and then bring it up in the next meeting. Then, of course, comes the part of gathering the money to get it. If there's anyone out there who knows someone in the telescope selling business, please contact SEDS.

Dues were also mentioned. Poor Lacey needs to open up a SEDS bank account but by golly, we don't have enough money. So please, turn in your dues by Halloween.

Unfortunately, Sean the T-shirt man wasn't able to make it and we weren't able to vote on T-shirt designs. Hopefully in the next meeting, but hey, gives you a couple more weeks to come up with your own design and bring it to the meeting.

The meeting was finally adjourned at 7:15p and we wept

ASTRONOMICS FIELD TRIP
Date: Oct 14, 1997
Time: 10:30/11:00a
Place: La Baguette/Astronomics
Organization: OU-SEDS (Students for the Exploration and Development of Space, University of Oklahoma)
Type: Telescope Committee

Members Present
-Phillip Forkner
-Hans Bruno
-Chris Henry
-Kendall Rogers
-Dan Lasher

Summary
We all met at La Baguette and drove to Astronomics from there. It's a pretty neat little place over there across the street from Albertson's, but there isn't much of a showroom because they specialize in mail-order. However, they are one of the largest mail-order retailers in the U.S. for Meade and Celestron products.

Once there, we spoke with Barbara, the sales repersentative (I guess) and basically just talked about what we were looking for (something kinda cheap!) and about other stuff. We were able to narrow down the choices to either a Celestron 8" Dobsonian (called a "StarHopper") or a Meade 8" Dobsonian. Both ran about $500.

Besides just the telescope, we need to get some lenses (the things that fit into the eyepiece) and found that Meade offers a nice little package which comes with a viewfinder and and few others for about $50. Celestron has no such package. On top of that, we would need to get some star charts and a case to lug it around in. We will most likely build the case ourselves since it's not so hard to do. Finally, then ending price came to about $600 dollars.

After our nice little excursion, we went back to La Baguette (this time on Main Street) and talked about some of the administrative details. It became apparant that we would need some place to store the scope on campus (hopefully Neilson Hall). We would also need some type of formal structure when taking the scope out. Insurance was mentioned. The final topic covered, and the most pertinent, was fundraising. It is still up in the air. We would like to have members donate money for the scope fund knowing that they will get weekly (hopefully) excursions to use the scope. If we don't get enough people, then some other plan will have to be invesitgated.

The meeting adjourned at 12:30p

-Philanthropy

Summary
First of all, there's a Halloween Party at Jennifer's (the President's) house on Oct 31st. Admission is free for members and five bucks for nons (at which point you'll become a member if you want to!). If you need instructions on how to get there, please call Jennifer @ 321.4134. Maybe she'll let you in free if you wear a costume.

Dues are due, by Oct 31, or else! (what?)

Tara is taking care of broshures. If you want to help out, you need to get in touch with her. Check back later for info on how to get a hold of her. Or you can email the president and she'll give you some moe info.

Don't forget the observation going on Friday Nov 7th. More info will be available later (check the calendar). There's going to be a grad student giving a lecture on Black Holes.

We talked extensively about the telescope at this meeting, however, hopefully we won't need to buy one because the Astrophysics Dept. may let us borrow one. Let's keep our fingers crossed and our eyes opened.

SEDS now has its own listserv. To subscribe, you need to send a message to "listserv@listserv.ou.edu" and in the body of the message only, type "subscribe seds your name". The address in the reply field is the one the listserv will use. If you want to send a message to the listserv, send it to "seds@listserv.ou.edu" and that message will be replayed to all subscribers.

Fundraising is coming up. We still need lots of help in the Fundraising arena. Dan Lasher agreed to be chairman for the Lloyd Noble fundraiser where many of you (and me!) will clean up Lloyd Noble after a basketball game or something and earn around 3-5 hundred dollars! (takes about three hours with 10 or so people). Earning may vary, talk with Lasher for more details.

Finally, Philanthropy. Marcos mentioned something about Omniplex volunteers where some SEDSers will go to the omniplex in OKC and spend the afternoon with some kids. It's some kind of a quiz tournament and you'll be fed for free! (totally worth it). Also, there was mention about some high school science fair judges needed. Get in touch with Marcos for more info (look for the upcoming members list with emails).

The meeting adjourned at 7:40p

Thanks

Summary

Are we realy in danger of earth-colliding asteroids? It would seem so. It's amazing to know that there are approximately 100 craters on the earth's surface, some them 50 miles across! And what are we doing to stop this? Nothing, well almost. There are a few astrophysicists searching for near-earth asteroids now and will soon need some dedicated students to help track them. If you're interested and motivated, plese contact Dr. Bill Romanishin, wromanishin@ou.edu. Also, look for a meteor shower in November of 99.

The Nov 28 & 29th Lloyd Noble fundraiser has been cancelled because of the holidays, however, a new date has been set for December 9th. We need this money to pay for things such as flyers, broshures, T-shirts, field trips, a telescope (hopefully), conventions, etc.. There'll be a pizza party for the Lloyd Noble crew just after the clean-up.

Marcos has said that the Omniplex will still be needing volunteers for the science quiz they throw for the children. He'll have a sign-up sheet at the next meeting.

ELECTIONS!! At the next meeting, sometime during the week after Thanksgiving, we will have nominations for the 98-99 SEDS officers. Of course, you can nominate yourself. At the meeting after that (two-weeks after) we'll have elections. Check back at the website for available positions.

Some long term goals:
March: Student Space Awareness Week
May: International Space Development Conference hosted by Nasa
