Wellness & Diversity

The Office of Graduate Medical Education is committed to making certain that residents and fellows remain physically, mentally and emotionally healthy while completing their education program.  Residency is a stressful time so it is important residents take care of themselves, and the GME is here to support you so you may receive the most out of your learning experience.

Residency education must occur in the context of a learning and working environment that emphasizes a commitment to the well-being of students, residents, faculty members, and all members of the health care team.  Psychological, emotional, and physical well-being are critical in the development of the competent, caring, and resilient physician. Self-care is an important component of professionalism and is a skill that must be learned and nurtured in the context of other aspects of residency training.

In the current health care environment, residents and faculty members are at increased risk for burnout and depression.  The creation of a learning and working environment with a culture of respect and accountability for physician well-being is crucial to physicians’ ability to deliver the safest, best possible care to patients.

We are committed to create a medical community that is reflective of the society that we serve by nurturing a diverse group of individuals that will promote excellence and leadership in education and clinical care.  We believe in celebrating the multiple dimensions of diversity that each of us offer, such as but not limited to, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic circumstances, immigration status, physical ability and disability, veteran status, religion and age.  We also want to be sure we’re continuing to build community, where people who are members of groups who are under-represented in medicine feel that they can find and support each other.  We respect the dignity of all members of our community and we will ensure that all feel valued, respected and supported.
