Training Facilities

The metropolitan area of Tulsa has a population of just over 1,000,000 people. In keeping with the spirit of OU School of Community Medicine's goal to provide community-wide care, the OUDEM residents rotate at the three largest hospitals in the region– Hilcrest Medical Center, Saint Francis Hospital, and St. John Medical Center. This three-hospital model allows us to guarantee our residents the best possible experience in each of our clinical rotations.

Hillcrest Medical Center

Hillcrest Medical Center (HMC) is the primary teaching site of the University of Oklahoma Department of Emergency Medicine and offers broad Emergency Medicine exposure with a high level of patient acuity. HMC is a 760-bed facility with annualized ED volumes between 55,000 and 60,000. Hillcrest has Advanced Practice Practitioners who cover fast track 12 hours per day four days per week, resulting in a distinctively high patient acuity level for our resident providers. HMC is uniquely located between the upscale midtown and downtown areas and is the closest facility to North Tulsa, a socioeconomically disadvantaged area where patients often have challenges in their access to care.

The Hillcrest ED has a broad array of specialty coverage available including ENT, urology, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, and many medical sub-specialties. Hillcrest is the home of the Oklahoma Heart Institute (OHI), which is the premier heart hospital in Tulsa with both LVAD and ECMO capabilities. These capabilities are easily accessible for appropriate patients from our ED and enable our residents to train with the sickest patients. The Burn Center at Hillcrest serves as Tulsa's only resource for burn patients and is a referral center for burn patients from across the region. In addition to rotations in Hillcrest's state-of-the-art ED, which opened in 2014, OUDEM residents rotate at Hillcrest in Obstetrics/Gynecology, Anesthesia, Neurology, and Critical Care.

Saint Francis Hospital

Saint Francis Hospital, located on Tulsa's south side, is a 918-bed facility serving a relatively middle-class and suburban population. St. Francis has the main pediatric facility in Tulsa and a busy, high-acuity ED with annual ED volumes around 75,000-80,000. St. Francis is one of two local trauma centers and serves as a regional referral center. Resident rotations at SFH include the Pediatric ICU, Orthopedics, and multiple months in the ED.

Ascension St. John Medical Center

St. John Medical Center (SJMC) is a 564-bed hospital located in midtown Tulsa, across the street from the historic Utica Square shopping area. SJMC is located one mile from Hillcrest Medical Center and gives the residents exposure to a different patient population and a different model of emergency medicine. St. John is one of two local trauma centers and has an annual ED volume of approximately 55,000-60,000. Resident rotations at SJMC are Trauma and multiple months in the Emergency Department working under the supervision of our OU faculty.
