Sooner Weekend: Day of the Dead, Drop-In-Drawing & Fuego Friday

#SoonerWknd: Day of the Dead, Drop-In-Drawing & Fuego Friday

Squeeze a few of these events into your weekend, like OU’s Day of the Dead carnival and Fuego Friday kiln firing demonstrations.

The University of Oklahoma campus and city of Norman are crawling with events this Halloween weekend — but, really, who's surprised by that? Take a look at this week’s Sooner Weekend events roundup and add a couple events to your weekend lineup.

Fuego Friday

Pop into Fuego Friday from 7-10 p.m. at the OU School of Art & Art History’s Ceramics Facility. The free event is open to the public and gives folks a chance to watch ceramic demonstrations and kiln firing events, which will include a Raku firing and a 2350-degree salt kiln firing.

Dia de los Muertos

For the third year in a row, the University of Oklahoma pays tribute to Hispanic cultures by celebrating Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. Come prepared to get your face painted in sugar skull makeup, listen to live music and see costumed llamas (not kidding — llamas are revered animals in many Hispanic cultures). The free event takes place from 6-10 p.m. Oct. 31 at the Walker Adams Mall.

Halloween baseball game

Ever seen Peter Pan throw the first pitch? You might at the Annual ALS Awareness Halloween Game, hosted by the University of Oklahoma baseball team. The team and head coach Pete Hughes invite the community to get into costume and come out to L. Dale Mitchell Park for the second annual free event, taking place at 6 p.m. Oct. 30. The Sooners will also take the field for an intra-squad scrimmage dressed in costume.

Drop-In Drawing

Here’s an event for the noncommittal: a come-and-go, no-registration-required drawing session at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. An OKC MOA instructor provides basic instruction and materials, and you get to create some artwork throughout the museum’s permanent collection and special exhibition galleries. The Drop-In Drawing event, taking place from 2-4 p.m. Nov. 1, is included with general museum admission and free to museum members.

Contemporary Dance Oklahoma

We know you’ve been waiting all semester to see the University of Oklahoma dance students do what they do best. Check’em out at one of a few time slots this weekend when the University Theatre and School of Dance present Contemporary Dance Oklahoma — a fantastic production of new choreography and works from the CDO repertory.

Have an event you’d like promoted in Sooner Weekend? First check the OU Campus Calendar to make sure it's not already listed. If it's not — get it on there! Your event could be featured in an upcoming #SoonerWknd events roundup.
