OU Law Hosts 'Making a Murderer' Defense Attorney Dean Strang

The University of Oklahoma College of Law will welcome famed criminal defense attorney Dean A. Strang for a Q&A discussion April 4.

Strang is best known for his role as defense attorney for Steven Avery in the Netflix original series “Making a Murderer.” The discussion is slated for noon in the OU College of Law’s Dick Bell Courtroom.

“We are both honored and excited to host Dean Strang at OU Law,” said OU College of Law Dean Joseph Harroz Jr. “His expertise in criminal defense is widely recognized and he will undoubtedly offer a unique perspective for our students when considering appropriate measures to take as advocates in the field of criminal defense.”

Strang is a practicing attorney in Madison, Wisconsin. He is best known for his work as one of Steven Avery’s trial lawyers, as well as for his first book, "Worse than the Devil: Anarchists, Clarence Darrow, and Justice in a Time of Terror." His work includes five years as Wisconsin’s first Federal Defender; shareholder in three of the state’s leading criminal defense firms (Hurley, Burish & Stanton, S.C., Fitzgerald & Strang, S.C. and Shellow, Shellow & Glynn, S.C.); and co-founder of StrangBradley, LLC.

He is an adjunct professor at Marquette University Law School, the University of Wisconsin Law School and University of Wisconsin’s Division of Continuing Studies. Strang is a member of the American Law Institute and serves on several charity boards, including the Wisconsin Innocence Project. His second book is forthcoming in early 2018. Strang earned his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law and an A.B. from Dartmouth College.
