OU College of Nursing Earns High Rankings for Program Excellence

February 13, 2020

The Fran and Earl Ziegler College of Nursing at the University of Oklahoma has achieved recognition as the state’s top nursing school and as one of the best programs nationally, according to newly announced rankings.

The OU College of Nursing has been ranked 56th out of more than 3,000 nursing schools nationwide in Nursing Schools Almanac’s 2019 rankings of the best nursing schools in the United States. This position in the rankings place the OU College of Nursing in the sixth spot overall in the Southwest region.

“These rankings demonstrate the commitment of the College of Nursing to transforming health through research, education and practice for the benefit of Oklahoma and beyond,” said Dr. Julie

Hoff, dean of the OU College of Nursing. “We are an aspirational institution and are pleased with this recognition.”

In its methodology for the rankings, Nursing Schools Almanac collected data on more than 3,000 institutions, basing its findings on several factors, including student success, particularly on the NCLEX licensure examination; depth of nursing programs; and the institution’s academic prestige and value. Of the institutions surveyed, only 6% made the list of the best public and private nursing schools in the nation. Nursing Schools Almanac is a resource for detailed, comprehensive and analytical information for those considering nursing as a career and seeking the best educational experience.

Additionally, the OU College of Nursing has been ranked the No. 1 Best Accredited Nursing School in Oklahoma for 2020 out of eight programs statewide, according to NursingProcess.org. Factors used to determine rankings include four broad areas – academic quality, NCLEX-RN exam performance, affordability and overall reputation. The NCLEX-RN exam, or National Council Licensure Exam, tests professional knowledge and nursing skills and is required for obtaining licensure to practice as a registered nurse in the state. The first-time pass rate constitutes 30% of a school’s ranking, as exam performance is deemed a clear indicator of academic emphasis.
