Tom Lumpkin, the Michael F. Price Chair and Professor of Entrepreneurship and executive director of the Tom Love Center for Entrepreneurship and Economic Development at the Michael F. Price College of Business, has received a 10-year Impact Award from SAGE Publishing for his paper, “Entrepreneurial Orientation and Business Performance: An Assessment of Past Research and Suggestions for the Future.”
The paper, co-written with Andreas Rauch, Johan Wiklund and Michael Frese, was published in 2009 in Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, a leading entrepreneurship journal included on the Financial Times top 50 journals list, which is used to rank top business school programs globally. According to SAGE Publishing, the award-winning paper, which explores the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and business performance, has been cited more than 1,000 times over the past decade.
“At the time our author team decided to conduct this study, I had been working on the concept of entrepreneurial orientation and business performance since I was a doctoral student,” said Lumpkin. “There had been over 100 empirical studies on EO, but the findings were equivocal. The meta-analysis gave us a chance to statistically compare all the relevant studies and enabled us to demonstrate what we had been hypothesizing: that higher EO was associated with stronger business performance. I was fortunate to work with a great team of researchers, all of whom made important contributions to this meta-analysis. We are grateful to all of those researchers who have cited this work and made this award possible, and we are honored that SAGE Publishing has recognized our efforts with this award.”
SAGE Publishing recognized three social science papers in total for their long-term academic influence. In their inaugural year, the 10-Year Impact Awards are given to the authors of articles published in any SAGE journal that received the most citations over the span of a decade.

In many ways, his research reflects the excellence and entrepreneurial spirit that runs throughout our faculty.”
Lumpkin and his co-authors previously received another award for the same paper: USC Marshall’s Greif Research Impact Award in 2015.
This year’s impact awards considered citation data for all articles published in 2009. That year, SAGE published more than 40,000 articles across a wide range of disciplines, with more than 75% from social and behavioral science.
These awards were created as part of SAGE’s larger effort to inspire and change the conversation around research impact, especially in the social and behavioral sciences. While a large part of this effort focuses on finding new ways to recognize impact beyond counting citations outside of academia, the 10-Year Awards celebrate research with influence that has lasted longer or grown over time.
