About Writing (English) Placement

There are no enrollment restrictions for students with an ACT English sub-score of 19 or higher and/or an SAT Evidence-Based Reading/Writing score of 510 or higher. All incoming OU students with scores that do not meet this threshold are required to take a English Placement Assessment to determine whether they must take a stretch English course before moving on to ENGL 1113. If you have questions, please email the Assessment Center at assess@ou.edu.

Frequently Asked Questions

OU administers the reading placement test through the College Board’s College Board Accuplacer program, a web-based assessment designed to evaluate reading skills. It measures reading comprehension, the ability to identify main ideas, and the ability to make inferences.

The State Regents for Higher Education require assessment in math, reading, and writing for all incoming high school students who will start at OU as first time freshmen. If you are required to take an assessment or assessment(s), it is because the institution wants to measure your readiness for course placement.

Possibly. We must have your official transcript with the final grade on file before making a determination. You can submit official transcripts by requesting that the institution where you took the course send an official electronic transcript to oardocuments@ou.edu on your behalf or you can drop off a sealed official copy to Admissions & Recruitment located in the Jones Family Welcome Center at:

Jacobson Hall
550 Parrington Oval
Norman, Oklahoma 73019

Once it is received and processed, if you no longer need to assess, your appointment will be automatically deleted and a notification will be sent to your OU email.

If you complete an assessment and later submit concurrent or dual enrollment coursework, we will honor the higher placement, whether that comes from your assessment results or your concurrent credit.

If you have questions about transferring credit to OU, please call 405-325-0514 or email te@ou.edu.

No. Assessment is part of the registration process. If the system determines that you need to assess, you will need to schedule that assessment appointment before you can create and continue through for New Sooner Orientation registration. When do I have to complete my assessment(s)? It is best to complete your assessments as soon as possible. Your results can impact both your pre-enrollment in classes and your advising experience, so the sooner you complete them, the better. Nonetheless, assessments must be completed 3 business days prior to your scheduled New Sooner Orientation day or your orientation is subject to cancellation.

Yes. You may be able to use qualifying ACT or SAT scores to satisfy your English and/or Reading placement requirements.

  • An ACT English subscore of 19 or higher or an SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 510 or higher will remove the requirement to assess in English.

  • An ACT Reading subscore of 19 or higher or an SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 510 or higher will remove the requirement to assess in Reading.

Your official test scores must be on file with the University of Oklahoma before we can make this determination. Once your scores are received and processed, the system will automatically update your placement requirements and notify you if an assessment is no longer needed.

If you complete an assessment and later submit qualifying test scores, we will honor the higher placement
