Music: Brass Instruments
Program Description
The Brass area of the School of Music prepares students for professional careers as artists and educators, and for further advance study. Specialties within this area include applied study in trumpet, horn, euphonium, trombone, and tuba. Students receive private lessons and participate in weekly master classes.
OU Brass students benefit from working with some of the nation’s most highly regarded artists, all of whom are active performers in symphonic, jazz, and commercial music settings. Additionally, our Brass faculty participates in international, national, and regional festivals and competitions as artist, presenters, and adjudicators.
Brass students at the OU School of Music benefit from a variety of performance ensemble, including Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, Opera Orchestra, Jazz ensembles (large and small), and chamber ensembles such as brass quintets, brass choir, and ensembles with the OU Musical Theatre in live productions as members of the pit orchestra.
In addition to general university admission requirements, prospective brass instrument students must pass an audition on their major instrument before achieving admittance into the School of Music. Admission and audition information is available on the School of Music web site.
Degree Options
Degrees in Music Performance, Musical Arts (combined with a secondary outside field of study), and Music Education are available to all School of Music undergraduate students. Degrees in performance are also offered at the masters and doctoral levels (MM and DMA respectively).
Interests & Skills
The successful brass student at the University of Oklahoma School of Music should have a commitment to excellence in all things. Prior study in theory, music history, and keyboard is desirable, but not required. An enthusiastic and disciplined attitude to practicing is absolutely necessary.

Musicians from the School of Music’s Brass area are achieving success in virtually every facet of the professional music world, finding fulfilling careers in public school music education, and by winning positions in performance situations such as symphony orchestras and military bands. Additionally, graduates are continuing their study in the most prestigious graduate programs in the world.
