Program Description

The School of Music String Area prepares students for success as professional musicians and educators playing the bass, cello, guitar, harp, viola or violin. String instrument students receive the finest instruction available from the program's internationally renowned faculty, each of whom brings to the School of Music a rich portfolio of performing and teaching experience. Performance is a key component of music education, and string instrument students have performance opportunities in a variety of smaller ensembles as well as in the highly acclaimed OU Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to general university admission requirements, string instrument students must pass an instrumental audition before being admitted to the School of Music. Additional admission information is available at the School of Music Web site.

Degree Options

A string instrument student graduates with a Bachelor of Music Education or Bachelor of Music in Bass, Cello, Guitar, Harp, Viola or Violin degree. Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees are also available.

Interests & Skills

String Instruments students typically have interests in music performance and teaching. High school preparation should include training in instrumental technique, sightreading and performance experience.

Notable Achievements

OU's reputation for excellence attracts accomplished students from throughout the country, enhancing the overall educational experience of Music students. Graduates of the program regularly fill prestigious performance and academic posts and are often sought to present concerts, workshops and master classes at conferences around the United States.

The OU Symphony Orchestra is a full orchestra comprised entirely of students. The orchestra regularly plays for staged performances of the OU Opera Theatre and OU Ballet Company. The orchestra's repertoire ranges from light classics to symphonic masterpieces and centers on major works regularly performed by professional orchestras.
