The purpose of these optional assignments is to encourage further/additional interaction with your fellow students and/or instructor. If you take advantage of all of these extra credit opportunities, you can receive up to 35 points for the semester.

Freelance Writer assignment weeks: During Freelance Writer weeks, you'll usually respond to an interesting or controversial topic posted on our Desire2Learn discussion board; you'll then declare your substantive response in Desire2Learn by Monday night at 11:00 pm (same deadline as the week's Final Thoughts).

Adopt-a-Species assignment weeks: During Adopt-a-Species weeks, you'll get points for responding to posts of additional classmates. You'll receive 1 point per response, with a maximum of 2. Be sure to declare your responses in Desire2Learn by Monday at Noon (same deadline as the required responses).

An additional 2 points will be granted during week 6 if you adopt a non-vertebrate organism as your species for this semester's Adopt-a-Species assignments.

An additional 5 points will be granted at the end of the semester if you complete the course evaluation by noon on the Tuesday of finals week.

Here is the text of the Desire2Learn Gradebook Declaration for most weeks:

(2 points) I have contributed at least ____ substantive comments to the D2L extra credit discussion topic for this week (1 point each response).
