Madeline Woodard presented “Amphorae of Ancient Umbria: Trade in the Ancient Roman World Through Pottery“ at the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Showcase 2025. Drawing on her experiences excavating a Roman site near Ficulle (Umbria), Madeline traced the movement of amphora (ancient storage containers) to map patterns of river transport up and down the Italian peninsula under the Roman empire. Madeline received a $6,000 University of Oklahoma Provost's Summer UReCA Fellowship which allowed her to participate in the archaeological project at Ficulle (sponsored by the Department of Classics and Letters) and to do independent museum research.
Madeline, who will graduate summa cum laude with a degree in Classics: Classical Studies in 2026, is currently president of the Eta Sigma Phi Classical Honor Society and a flautist in the Pride of Oklahoma Marching Band. She is currently applying to graduate programs in classical art and archaeology.
