Profile
A. Robert Lauer is Professor of Spanish and Film in the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics and the Film and Media Studies Program at OU. He received his B.A. from the Ohio State University and his MA and PhD from the University of Michigan.
He has published seven books and more than 130 articles and c. 50 reviews in several areas of Hispanism and Film, with an emphasis on Hispanic Early Modern (Golden Age) Drama (especially Calderón) and Cervantes. As General Editor for Peter Lang Publishing, Inc. (New York), he has also published 44 volumes that form part of the monograph series Ibérica. His latest works are a critical and annotated edition of Pedro Calderón de la Barca's morality play (auto sacramental) El tesoro escondido(Kassel, Ger. / Pamplona, Sp.: Edition Reichenberger / Universidad de Narvarra, 2012); a special Cervantes monograph co-edited with Maria Caterina Ruta (Università di Palermo), Un paseo entre los centenarios cervantinos, for Cuadernos AISPI (2015) <http://www.ledijournals.com/ojs/index.php/cuadernos/issue/view/76>, and a special monograph issue on Lo abyecto, lo grotesco y lo sublime en la literatura áurea hispánica for Hispania Felix: Revista Hispano-Rumana de Cultura y Civilización de los Siglos de Oro 2016 (2017) [ISSN-e 2171-2158]. He has lectured extensively in the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, has received three teaching awards (two from the University of Wisconsin System and one from the OU Foundation Cecil W. Woods Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching [2005]), and has done consulting for the Modern Language Association of America (New York), the National Research Council (Washington, D.C.), the Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften (Vienna), and the Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines du Canada (Ottawa). He has also taught abroad at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster, Germany, and, virtually, at the Colegio de Michoacán, Mexico. He receives numerous invitations to read papers abroad, with partial or all expenses covered by the host institutions. He has received several grants, among them a Heinrich Hertz-Stiftung Fellowship. He serves in several editorial boards, among them Anagnórisis (Sp.), Anuario calderoniano (Sp.), and Arte nuevo (Switz.). With the former Kurt Reichenberger, he co-directed the international forums Coloquio Cervantes and Coloquio Teatro de los Siglos de Oro. His current academic blog, Siglo de Oro: España, an amalgamation of the previous ones, is highly active and has 1.8K members. His great passion in life is to travel.
