December Convocation

The College of Arts and Sciences December convocation ceremony will be held at 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 13, 2019, at the Lloyd Noble Center. Doors will open at 5 p.m. All graduates should arrive before 6 pm and enter via the South Ramp. All guests will enter via the East and West Lloyd Noble Center entrances.  ADA guests are encouraged to enter LNC through the southeast entrance.

There will be a livestream of the ceremony and the link will be available at a later date. 

During the ceremony, graduates will have their names read and photographs taken while crossing the stage and shaking hands with the dean and the department chair or school director. Graduates will later be contacted by Party Pics and offered an opportunity to purchase these photographs.

All graduates are asked to return to their seats after receiving their diplomas and await the end of the ceremony before departing.

ADA seating at the Lloyd Noble Center is available on a first-come, first-serve basis in designated areas on the north, east and west sides of the middle concourse and at W6 and W7 on the upper concourse. Non-wheelchair seating can be found on the last rows of LW6-LN3 and LE2-LN6 or the last row of any upper lever seating section. Lloyd Noble Center Policies

To assist with making convocation safe and enjoyable, please note the following safety procedures are in place for College Convocations held in the Lloyd Noble Center. 

All bags are subject to search by security personnel.

Permitted Items

  • Clear plastic bags (1 per person) no larger than 12" x 6" x 12"
  • One-gallon clear plastic freezer bags (1 per person)
  • Non-transparent clutch purses no larger than 4.5" x 6.5" (1 per person)
  • Bags necessary for approved medical equipment
  • Approved family care items (diapers, formula, etc.) must be in a clear plastic bag
  • EMPTY, clear plastic water bottles less than 17 oz.
  • Seat cushions and chair backs smaller than 16" wide and without frames or armrests.

Admissible for Commencement and Convocations only:

  • Still Photography Cameras
  • Video Cameras

Admissible only for Commencement if relocated due to inclement weather:

  • Umbrellas

Prohibited Items

Prohibited items must be returned to the owner’s car or discarded, and any unlawful items are subject to confiscation.

  • Alcohol (in all forms)
  • Baby Seats
  • Baby Strollers
  • Backpacks, camera bags, diaper bags, fanny packs, purses or binocular cases
  • Balloons
  • Banners/signs
  • Beach balls, footballs, balls or other sporting equipment
  • Coolers, containers or ice chests
  • Explosives, firearms or weapons
  • Folding chairs or stools
  • Food or drink
  • Gift-wrapped packages
  • Laptops
  • Laser pointers
  • Noise makers of any type (i.e. air horns, plastic horns, whistles, etc.)
  • Personal heaters
  • Pets (with the exception of registered service dogs)
  • Selfie sticks, bi pods, monopods, etc.
  • Umbrellas (except in the event of relocation to Lloyd Noble Center)

Security officers will search all bags before attendees will be permitted to enter. Those with prohibited items will be turned away.

Winter Convocation is set for 7 pm, Friday, Dec. 13 at the Lloyd Noble Center.

Commencement is the university-wide ceremony held each Spring that recognizes all bachelors, masters, and doctoral graduates from all of the Norman campus colleges. Each of the college's bachelor and master students are presented by the dean of the college to the President of the University as a group, with the request to grant them their degrees. Only the doctoral graduates receive individual recognition at the university-wide Commencement ceremony. The College of Arts and Sciences Convocation individually recognizes each baccalaureate and masters graduate. Each student’s name is read by an announcer, he or she is congratulated by the dean, and an official graduation photo is taken.

No tickets are required for guests. Please ensure to have completed a graduation check with your College of Arts and Sciences Academic Counselor and to have submitted a graduation application.

To ensure that all graduates are appropriately recognized, guests are asked to remain seated throughout the ceremony. Guests will not be allowed on the floor of the arena for photographs until the ceremony has concluded. A professional photographer will be on hand to take photographs as graduates cross the stage. Photos may be purchased later through Party Pics of Norman.

Guests with mobility issues are encouraged to use the entrance at the southeast corner of the facility. Contact Darla Madden ( or Julie Hamburger  ( for more information.

Given the large number of graduates we recognize at Convocation, we do not offer a rehearsal for students. Detailed instructions are included in your Convocation announcement and posted on the College's website.

Yes, your name will be called and a graduation photo will be taken at the college Convocation.

If you are an undergraduate or graduate and you have submitted an online graduation application with the OU Graduation Office, your name should be listed in the university-wide Spring Commencement program. For a free copy of the OU Spring Commencement program, send your mailing information and the number of copies you would like receive to or call (405) 325-0841.

You will be given a card when you arrive on location on the day of convocation. You will write your name on that card, as you want it to be announced, provide your permanent mailing address, and your degree and department. As you approach the stage, you will hand the card to the announcer, who will read your name as you cross the stage and are congratulated by your department chair and the deans. The card will then be given to the photographers so they can notify you when your photos are ready for viewing.

There are two ways to order your cap and gown before graduation.

IN-STORE - Students can purchase and pick up their graduation gear at the Jostens pop-up shop in the new The Sooner Shop (located in the Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium across from the football ticket office). Open Monday through Friday, 2 to 6 p.m.
