Undergraduate Major Themes

The major was designed to challenge students to engage deeply in the field while allowing them to tailor a program of study that meets their own individual interests. However, the department has identified some sets of courses that are relevant to several specific themes. These sets include recommendations for distribution courses and electives students can use to fulfill the major requirements while giving their Philosophy curriculum a tighter focus. But they are simply recommendations for courses to take together—the designated themes will not be noted on students’ diplomas, and it is not required that students follow these combinations.

To pursue a theme, students should select at least five courses. There must be at least one course from each distribution category; at least two additional courses, which will count as electives, may be from any category (two may be lower division). At least one among these courses must be at the 4000 level.

These courses are recommended for students who are considering applying to law school. They include courses specifically about law, about justifications of government, and about philosophical topics that stand in the background of legal reasoning.
