Dr. Tipler’s interests are in the areas American constitutional politics, applied political theory, and law and society. She is particularly interested in questions of legitimacy, approaching those questions from the perspective of democratic theory. Her research covers topics such as representation, presidential immunity, non-defense of laws by the executive branch, direct democracy, undocumented immigrant rights, marriage laws and litigation, and the new right. Dr. Tipler has publications in or forthcoming in the Maryland Law Review, the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, PS: Political Science and Politics, Presidential Studies Quarterly, and Space and Polity, as well as book reviews and other publications. She is currently working on a book on the democratic capacity of courts.

Dr. Tipler previously held a postdoctoral fellowship at Kenyon College’s Center for the Study of American Democracy and was a visiting assistant professor at Wake Forest University.
