Deonnie Moodie is Associate Professor in the Department of Religious Studies. She is an ethnographer and historian of religion specializing in South Asia and its global connections. She is especially interested in how religious ideas and practices entwine with political and economic discourse, re-shaping one another in distinctive ways in the modern world.
Moodie earned her Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Harvard University and M.Div. from Harvard Divinity School. She has a B. A. from Hope College, where she double-majored in International Studies and German. Her work has been supported by the National Humanities Center, the Henry Luce Foundation, and two Fulbright awards, along with numerous research awards from the University of Oklahoma. She is also the recipient of the James and JoAnn Holden Faculty Award for leadership in research and excellence in teaching courses at the freshman and sophomore level. She is proficient in Sanskrit, Bengali, and German and regularly delivers lectures on her research both nationally and internationally. She is also engaged in a number of projects to facilitate public understanding of religion. In 2024, she served as a content consultant for the YouTube series, Crash Course: World Religions. In 2021, she served as media partner for The Revealer. At OU, Moodie teaches Introduction to World Religions; Introduction to Hindu Traditions; Religion, Colonialism, and Nationalism in India; Money, Power, and God(s): Religion and Economy East and West; and Capstone.
