Rangar Cline

Rangar Cline is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies and an affiliate faculty in the Department of History at the University of Oklahoma. Before coming to the University of Oklahoma, he was a Visiting Professor of Classics at Furman University. He earned his Ph.D. at Penn State University and has been a Regular Member and Associate Member at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, where he was also a Fulbright Fellow. His first book Ancient Angels, about angel veneration in the Roman Empire, was published with Brill Press (Leiden, March 2011).

Professor Cline’s teaching and research interests include Roman religions, early Christianity, early Judaism, magic in the Roman world, Mediterranean archaeology and the material culture of religion. He has served on the staff of archaeological projects in Greece, Italy and Israel. He was an NEH Fellow at the Albright Institute for Archaeological Research in Jerusalem in 2017-2018.

Professor Cline was awarded an NEH Faculty Fellowship for 2026-2027 to complete the composition of his next book, Signs and Wonders: Roman Travelers in Search of Gods, Heroes, Saints and Angels, which examines the function of relics and natural wonders as objects of pilgrimage in the Roman Empire.
