Miriam Gross is Assistant Professor of History and International and Area Studies.  She teaches courses on Chinese and East Asian history and on environmental and disease crises and rural life in China.  Professor Gross’s research focuses on the history of rural public health and the popularization of science during the 1950s in China.  She examines these issues socially to see how new ideas and practices changed people’s lives, and politically, to see how the government used them to consolidate power.  She received her Master’s in International Affairs from Columbia University and her Ph.D. in Modern Chinese History from the University of California, San Diego.
