The Data Institute for Societal Challenges (DISC) at the University of Oklahoma is proud to recognize the outstanding leadership of Dr. Michael C. Wimberly, who served as Interim Director during Fiscal Year 2026, and to welcome Dr. Shishir Shah as DISC's new Director.

During his tenure as Interim Director, Wimberly guided DISC through a year of significant growth and achievement. Under his leadership, the institute strengthened its role as a hub for interdisciplinary research, bringing together faculty, students, government agencies, industry, and community partners to address complex societal challenges through data science and artificial intelligence.

FY26 was a milestone year for DISC. Institute-affiliated researchers submitted more than $63 million in research proposals and secured nearly $19 million in funded awards. DISC also continued to invest in innovative research through its Seed Funding Program, which has supported 141 interdisciplinary research teams involving 414 researchers and generated more than $8.67 million in follow-on external funding from an investment of $1.26 million.

"Dr. Wimberly's leadership has positioned DISC for continued success," said the DISC team. "We are grateful for his dedication, thoughtful leadership, and commitment to advancing interdisciplinary research during this important period of transition."

Building on this strong foundation, DISC is pleased to welcome Dr. Shishir Shah as Director.

An accomplished leader in artificial intelligence, computer vision, and data science, Shah brings extensive experience in advancing interdisciplinary research and building strategic collaborations. As Director, he will lead DISC's continued efforts to expand research excellence, strengthen partnerships, support faculty and student success, and advance the University of Oklahoma's leadership in AI and data science.

"It is an honor to join the Data Institute for Societal Challenges and build upon the strong foundation established through the dedication of our faculty, staff, students, collaborators, and leadership," Shah said. "Together, we will continue advancing innovative research and developing data-driven solutions that benefit Oklahoma and communities around the world."

As DISC enters this next chapter, the institute celebrates Wimberly's lasting contributions and looks forward to continued growth and impact under Shah's leadership.
