Global Public Relations & Strategic Communication

Katerina Tsetsura, College of Journalism

This upper-level undergraduate course will introduce students to global perspectives on public relations theory and practice. A primary goal for the course is to familiarize students with the rapid development of the public relations field in multiple regions of the world and to demonstrate the opportunities the field offers to future professionals in the area of corporate communication and transactional businesses, international relations, government, non-governmental organizations, and global public relations and communication agencies/firms.

Katie Paine

Katie Delahaye Paine is the founder and CEO of KDPaine & Partners LLC a New Hampshire based consultancy that provides plans, products, and services that help PR, public affairs, and marketing professionals measure their success and make better, more informed decisions for their organizations. She writes KDPaine’s Measurement Blog and publishes the electronic newsletter and blog, The Measurement Standard. Her book, Measures of Success, KDPaine’s

Guide to measuring your public relationships was published in January 2008, which is used as a college textbook in many educational institutions. For the past 17 years, Paine and her firms have read and analyzed millions of news articles, Internet postings and other forms of communications as well as conducting hundreds of thousands of interviews in the relentless pursuit of quantitative and qualitative measures of her client’s marketing success. She works with some of the world’s most admired brands including Raytheon, Georgia Tech, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Most recently, her endeavors have been focused on providing cost effective measurement programs for non-profits, small businesses and government agencies.

Juan-Carlos Molleda

Dr. Molleda is a professor in the Department of Public Relations and director of the MAMC Global Strategic Communication of the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida (UF). He is also an affiliated faculty of the UF Center for Latin American Studies and a Fulbright Senior Specialist. Dr. Molleda received his Bachelor of Science in Social Communication (1990) from Universidad del Zulia in Venezuela, a Master of Science in Corporate and Professional Communications (1997) from Radford University in Virginia, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Journalism and Mass Communications with an emphasis on international public relations and international business (2000) from the University of South Carolina, where he also coordinated applied communication research projects. Between 1987 and 1993, he obtained his major work experience from a Venezuelan financial consortium, acting as manager of public relations, corporate communication, and advertising and promotions.  In 1998 and 2003, Dr. Molleda accomplished “Professional Summers” at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of South Carolina and the global public relations firm Burson Marsteller Latin America, Miami, respectively.

Dr. Ordeix is a full time professor in CSR and Public Relations at Blanquerna School of Communication of the Ramon Llull University (Barcelona) where he acts as Public Affairs Officer. He is part time and visiting professor of ESRP-UB, UPF, ESADE, UDG, ESIC, DUOC-UC (Chile), Erfurt University (Germany) and Emerson College (Boston). He serves as a Vice-President Global Communication Institute e.V. and Consultant of the International Virtual Consulting Firm. In the past, he has been the communication director for Spain of the Manpower Inc. and the Spanish Communication Practice director for the US based consultancy Mercer Human Resource Consulting. Enric Ordeix is graduated in Public Relations by the University of Barcelona and in Journalism and Political Sciences by the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

Gregor Halff

Dr. Gregor Halff is an Associate Professor of Corporate Communication Practice, Associate Dean and leads the MBA and EMBA programs at the Singapore Management University. He has founded the first master program in communication management in an Asian-Pacific University. He has taught in 4 continents and publishes in the key journals of corporate communication and public relations. Before joining academia, Gregor was managing partner at Publicis, the world’s third largest advertising network and co-founder of Publicis Public Relations (today: MSL Group). Gregor is Chair of the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management.

Jim Spangler

Chief Communications Officer, oversees Corporate Communications globally for NAVISTAR Corp. A 26-year communications veteran, Spangler brings to Navistar a wide range of communications experience. He spent nearly 12 years with Tenneco, where he served as vice president of global communications and was responsible for corporate positioning, communications strategy and policy, executive communications, employee communications, media relations and public relations. Before joining Tenneco, Jim was director of global public relations and media relations for Arthur Andersen. Jim also spent nearly eight years at Amoco Corporation in roles of increasing responsibility within the company's Public and Government Affairs group. Spangler began his career as a reporter at City News Bureau of Chicago. Spangler holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Illinois. He is a member of the Arthur Page Society and the Public Relations Society of America.

Anne Pierson-Smith

Dr. Anne Peirson-Smith is Assistant Professor in the Department of English, City University of Hong Kong. Over the past eighteen years in Hong Kong she has been teaching about the use of English in advertising and public relations, fashion culture, fashion marketing communications, persuasive communication, and visual communication. She is currently researching such topics as 'cosplay' and youth fashion styles in South East Asia, the role and application of collaborative writing in the creative industries, and the use of visual symbolism in fashion advertising campaigns. Dr Anne Pierson-Smith's work blends her academic and professional experience, as she previously worked in the public relations industry and as a corporate trainer for major local and global clients. She has recently published a new book on such industries in the Asian region, Public Relations in Asia Pacific: Communicating Effectively Across Cultures (Wiley 2009). Currently, she is engaged in two other major book projects, Introduction to Fashion for Berg publishers (due for publication 2011) and Persuasive Communication: from Theory to Practice for Palgrave Macmillan (2012).

Roger Frizzell

Roger Frizzell is the Senior Vice President of Communications and Chief Communications Officer for Carnival Cruises Corporation where he is responsible for all corporate-level communications and public relations for the world's largest cruise line. A crisis communication expert, Frizzell was previously vice president of corporate relations and chief communications officer for Pacific Gas and Electric where he oversaw all internal and external communications, online communications and advertising at the utility company. Frizzell was previously vice president-corporate communications & advertising of American Airlines. He oversaw advertising, corporate communications and AA Publishing, the small business unit of American Airlines that publishes five publications including American Way and Southwest Spirit. Before joining American, Frizzell served as executive director-public relations & communications at Hewlett Packard Corporation where he managed worldwide public relations and analyst relations.  Frizzell was named Distinguished Alumni of the Gaylord College in 2008. While at OU, Frizzell was a four-time All-American Wrestler and an Academic All-American.
