Pre-Departure
Continuing the Application: Forms for the Host University
Once students have been accepted by the Education Abroad Office at OU, the next step is to complete the forms required by the receiving institution. These include information on the academic major, interests, health, insurance, language proficiency, course preferences, etc. Many of our partner universities will not issue an acceptance letter until they have received these forms. An acceptance letter from the receiving institution is often necessary for requesting a student visa from that country's embassy or consult in the United States.
Visas
The majority of semester and year-long study abroad programs require the participant to obtain a student visa before traveling abroad. The Education Abroad staff are familiar with visa procedures and are available to help students with the process. However, it is ultimately the student's responsibility to compile all required documentation and request the visa from the appropriate embassy or consulate. Visas are only occasionally required for summer programs.
Pre-Departure Orientation
All students MUST attend the Pre-Departure Orientation. The information is included in the official acceptance letter from our office.
The Pre-Departure Orientation is a day-long preparation session held on a Saturday late in the semester. During the orientation, information will be provided on all aspects of study abroad. Some of the topics covered are "culture shock", safety abroad, visas, and insurance. Parents are welcome to attend, but must RSVP to the Education Abroad office (405-325-1693) no less than 5 business days before the date of the event.
Summer pre-departure orientations are held during a week-night in early April.
