McLaughlin Family Honors Matriarch with Gift to Debt-Free Teachers Program

When Jean McLaughlin’s family realized her 80th birthday was on the horizon, they knew they wanted to do something to make this milestone birthday extra special. They reflected on Jean’s passions which include helping others and education. As a former educator, Jean knows the challenges and rewards of the profession.

After research and discussion, the McLaughlin Family Foundation decided to make a generous $80,000 contribution to the Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education’s Debt-Free Teachers program which retains great teachers in the state through student loan forgiveness.

“As a family, we wanted to make a meaningful gift in honor of Jean's 80th birthday that would support those who educate children in Oklahoma,” said Kelly Gray, CEO of the McLaughlin Family Foundation. “Investing in tomorrow's teachers seemed like the perfect choice, and it means a lot to us that a cadre of teachers in this special program at OU will be able to educate and inspire future citizens without the burden of college debt.”

The family surprised Jean with this wonderful gift at a family birthday dinner. JRCoE Executive Director of Development Emily Reed was on hand to help with the surprise and explain the impact this gift in honor of Jean would have on the future of this program.

“The generous gift of the McLaughlin Family Foundation not only affects the numerous teachers who will stay in Oklahoma classrooms because of this program, but it also benefits hundreds and eventually thousands of schoolchildren whose lives will be better because of the teachers retained by this program,” Reed said.

The look of joy and surprise on Jean’s face at the announcement was priceless. Upon reflection, she says, "All children deserve the very best teachers. Focused students become good teachers and this program helps people who want to teach concentrate on their learning, rather than worrying about future debt."

While birthdays are moments in time, the gift the McLaughlin Family Foundation made to celebrate Jean McLaughlin will help Oklahoma teachers and their communities forever.
